There's no official Xero connector for ChatGPT

Xero's own AI work today is a free, single-organisation, read-only connector for Claude, and a separate, local, developer-oriented MCP package - not a hosted connector ChatGPT can add as a custom connector. That leaves ChatGPT without a first-party way to read or draft against Xero at all. Invio's connector is exactly that: a hosted, remote MCP endpoint you can add directly in ChatGPT's Developer mode. This is what we found when we checked, and it can change without notice - we are not claiming it as a permanent state of the market.

Connect Xero and generate a connector URL

In Invio, go to Settings > MCP > Xero, connect the Xero organisations you want to share, then click Generate connector URL. Copy it straight away - it is shown exactly once.

Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT

You'll need ChatGPT Plus or Pro. In ChatGPT's own Settings, turn on Developer mode - this is what lets you add a custom remote connector at all.

Add the connector URL

Still in ChatGPT Settings, add a custom connector and paste the URL you copied from Invio. ChatGPT can now see the tools this connector offers.

Ask a question first

Try something read-only, like what's outstanding on one of your organisations. Reads run straight through - no approval needed. Then ask it to draft an invoice or change a contact, so you see the approval step happen for real.

Reads are live. Writes wait for you.

ChatGPT drafts

It reads your live Xero data directly. When it wants to create or change an invoice, a contact, a credit note or a journal, that becomes a draft - not a change to your books.

Invio holds it

The draft sits in your approval queue, showing the exact organisation and the exact payload Invio would send. Left untouched, it expires after 24 hours and nothing happens.

You approve

Approve or reject inside Invio. Nothing reaches Xero until you do, and every approval records who made it.

Questions about ChatGPT and Xero

Is there an official Xero connector for ChatGPT?

Not as far as we can find, checked again on 9 September 2026. Xero's own official AI work is a free, single-organisation, read-only connector for Claude, plus a local, developer-oriented MCP package - neither is the hosted, remote connector ChatGPT's custom-connector feature expects. That could change without notice, so treat this as accurate today, not a permanent claim.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus or Pro?

Yes. Adding a custom remote connector in ChatGPT requires Developer mode, which is only available on a Plus or Pro plan - that's ChatGPT's own requirement, not something Invio adds on top.

What happens when ChatGPT tries to change something in Xero?

It can't post the change directly. ChatGPT hands the draft to Invio, which shows you exactly what it wants to write and to which organisation, and holds it. Nothing reaches Xero until you approve it inside Invio, and an unapproved draft expires after 24 hours.

Can I point the same connector at Claude as well?

Yes. One connector URL works with Claude, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-capable client on the same subscription - you do not need a second plan to use more than one assistant. See the Claude-specific guide if you use both.
